July 2010 Update: Finished up an archway and purchased this rooms first accent piece. Eventually all the furniture will be replaced but this is the first to be purchased specificaly for this room. We call it the Bish Bench. (bishop)
The wood on the arch looks very different than the the rest of the images. In truth all the wood is the same tone just low light settings on the camera really pushed the wood to the red for some reason. The wood tones in the arch way are closer to what the room actually looks like in person. Don't worry that BRIGHT white wall plug is slated to get replaced with something more in keeping with the theme.![]()
The beam is comming along nicely with the knots and trim stained. sadly the room will look like a wreck and disjointed furniture for a while. We are considering getting in some interrior decorators to really do the room justice when we near the end of the panelling project.(1 1/2 years working a few hours every weekend)
May 2010 Update: Center beam comming along with celtic knot accents. Of course ceiling holes still need to be fixed and new furniture that is in keeping with the theme and does not hide the tracery but all in good time. Will look like a trainwreck while under construction down here.
A vent pannel carving i did to match the theme and a close up of the celtic knots on the beam which is yet to be stained. Tia worked out the formula for the stain which is a composit of two stains she hit the exact color I was looking for right on the head. Dang shes good.

August 2009 updates on the paneling project.
We recently added a waterproofing system to the house and had a couple of the original panels torn out We decided that now was a perfect time to re-envision the den and so began the monstor project. The wife and I love decorative woods and Irish pubs so the den will be remade in to a waynescot paneled theme. I will be posting periodic in progress photos about once a month. We added some plastic behind the paneling for the exterior walls and we are just putting paneling over top of the original paneling on the other walls.

Presently working on an alter cross.I first created a model in fomecore and made adjustments to the model and drawings and this allowed me to see it in the space before committing it to the actual wood. Good thing too several esthetic adjustments were made. Now print outs are spray mounted to the wood itself.

Cross main is cut out
All lines are scored with an exacto before using any other tools be it dremel or chisel so as to get a very defined edge. I usually come out about a 16th of an inch into the waist wood and 45 cut into the outline to create a small grooved outline. I then cut out the central shape here and carved using a dremel for the outside circle using the grooved outlines to keep me in line and gouge chisels for the interior shapes.

Cross Carving and Arm
This is more the correct color. Sometimes I shoot these in dim lighting and the camera settings give it a golden hue.You can see one of the roughed in carvings at the top, one started below and one of the arms cut out and shaped ready to receive a carving.

Cross stand now complete Tia helped sketch the design. She did like 4 or so drawings I selected a very nice one and did a little re-interpreting. It came out well I thought.
